SCHOOL SAFETY 101–BASIC AND ADVANCED CONCEPTS

ROE #1– JWCC Southeast Education Center, Pittsfield, IL, 8:30am – 11:30am, April 13, 2022

Attention:  Superintendents, principals, assistant principals

A safe educational environment is essential for our children to learn, and enhancing the safety of campuses is critical for all school districts and communities. Participants in this half-day workshop will go through an all-hazards approach regarding school safety. Participants will learn about essential school safety efforts and advanced concepts such as emergency plans, evacuations, and reunification. This workshop will even provide an opportunity to effectively learn how to conduct a full-scale reunification exercise.

We will discuss the components of the School Safety Drill Act, how to conduct drills effectively, and how to make safety drills more meaningful and valuable. We will review the recommendations of the Illinois Terrorism Task Force School Safety Working Group in conjunction with discussing what is on the horizon. Emergency preparedness concepts will be examined, covering trauma management (i.e., Stop the Bleed), the importance of tabletop exercises, the formation of classroom first aid kits, behavior threat assessment, and critical communication pieces.

School safety concepts will be introduced, which are examples of low-hanging fruit that are free or relatively inexpensive to implement to improve the overall safety plan and instill a safety culture in schools. Participants will learn about the priorities for school security, including an introduction to Site Security Assessments. We will also cover the concepts of CPTED (Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design).

Presenters are Dr. Roger Alvey, Superintendent, and Mr. Cody Martzluf, Associate Superintendent/CSBO of Illini Bluffs CUSD #327. Both have extensive backgrounds in school safety efforts and have presented at local, state, and national conferences.
