This workshop goes along with the SEL Series: Beyond Compliance –  Helping Reluctant Learners Engage. This workshop CAN be attended if you cannot attend the other 2 sessions.

Engagement is often treated as something students either have or do not have. In reality, the behaviors that sustain engagement are skills that can be explicitly taught and strengthened over time.

This session focuses on how educators can intentionally support students as they develop the social emotional skills needed for sustained engagement in learning. Participants will explore how skills develop progressively, moving from awareness to guided practice to independent application, and why students often struggle when these steps are skipped.

Educators will examine how to break down complex skills into manageable components and create opportunities for students to practice them within academic work. Participants will also explore how reflection routines, feedback, and classroom dialogue help students recognize their growth and transfer skills across learning situations.

By the end of the session, educators will understand how to support students at different stages of skill development and will leave with practical approaches to help reluctant learners build the habits, confidence, and strategies necessary for meaningful engagement in school.
